Q. Asam Exe\u00adcut\u00aded in ele\u00adgant gild\u00aded stuc\u00adco on a green bro\u00adcade back\u00adground, they depict the archangels Raphael, Michael, Uriel, and Gabriel, their head\u00adgear indi\u00adcat\u00ading the four then known parts of the earth which they pro\u00adtect\u00aded. Between these fig\u00adures, gild\u00aded stuc\u00adco reliefs by the same mas\u00adter con\u00adnect the real space of the nave (both for\u00admal\u00adly and the\u00admat\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly) with the illu\u00adsion\u00adary heav\u00aden\u00adly space of the dome fres\u00adcoes above. Above the sanc\u00adtu\u00adary arch, in the \u201cDeath of St. Bene\u00addict\u201d, the saint, still on his feet, expires in the arms of his brethren. This is jux\u00adta\u00adposed with the \u201cDeath of St. Scholas\u00adti\u00adca\u201d, Benedict\u2019s sis\u00adter, on the west\u00adern side. Her soul is depict\u00aded as ascend\u00ading to heav\u00aden in the shape of a dove. The two reliefs on the long sides depict scenes from Benedict\u2019s life: to the south, the con\u00adstruc\u00adtion of the order\u2019s moth\u00ader house at Monte Cassi\u00adno in 529 (com\u00adplet\u00aded in spite of the devil\u2019s inter\u00adven\u00adtion); to the north, the prophe\u00adcy of the immi\u00adnent death of the Ostro\u00adgoth King Toti\u00adla. These eight reliefs are sep\u00ada\u00adrat\u00aded by flat bands dec\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded with the so-called \u201cSt. Bene\u00addict Medal\u00adlion\u201d, which con\u00adtin\u00adue the upward line of the mighty pilasters around the nave. The four high flat\u00adtened arch\u00ades are crowned by typ\u00adi\u00adcal Asam fig\u00adures of the evan\u00adge\u00adlists, John, Matthew, Mark, and Luke, with the last-named, the patron saint of artists, placed imme\u00addi\u00adate\u00adly below the above-men\u00adtioned stuc\u00adco bust&nbsp; of C.
