The inscrip\u00adtion on the upper gallery of the church, which cites Aventi\u00adnus, records that in 575, St. Rupert con\u00adse\u00adcrat\u00aded a chapel built over a Roman tem\u00adple on this spot. This does not, how\u00adev\u00ader, accord with Rupert\u2019s bio\u00adgraph\u00adi\u00adcal dates, as he died short\u00adly after 716. The most recent series of exca\u00adva\u00adtions has estab\u00adlished that the chapel was part of a for\u00adti\u00adfied cas\u00adtle erect\u00aded in the 10th cen\u00adtu\u00adry by the bish\u00adops of Regens\u00adburg in the wake of the Hun\u00adgar\u00adi\u00adan inva\u00adsions. The quar\u00adry-stone\u00adma\u00adson\u00adry in the low\u00ader church can be dat\u00aded to this time. In the 11th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, three altar nich\u00ades were added to the sim\u00adple rec\u00adtan\u00adgu\u00adlar room of the low\u00ader church, and in the 12th cen\u00adtu\u00adry, an addi\u00adtion\u00adal storey was added. The con\u00adse\u00adcra\u00adtion of a side altar to St. Achatius, record\u00aded in 1358, sug\u00adgests a phase of refur\u00adbish\u00adment around this time, and it is to this peri\u00adod that the still extant frag\u00admen\u00adtary cycle of Goth\u00adic images may well be ascribed.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In 1713, Abbot Mau\u00adrus B\u00e4chl com\u00admis\u00adsioned the Kel\u00adheim mas\u00adter mason Cas\u00adpar \u00d6ttl to demol\u00adish the crum\u00adbling upper por\u00adtions of the church and raise a new struc\u00adture in its place. The new church was giv\u00aden a flat\u00adtened semi\u00adcir\u00adcu\u00adlar apse in the east and an open stair\u00adcase in the west, and a squat tow\u00ader, which was sur\u00admount\u00aded by a sim\u00adple dome and lantern and incor\u00adpo\u00adrat\u00aded a sac\u00adristy and ora\u00adto\u00adry, was added on the north\u00adern side. Unfor\u00adtu\u00adnate\u00adly, the attend\u00ading crowds caused the low\u00ader church vault to col\u00adlapse dur\u00ading the con\u00adse\u00adcra\u00adtion cer\u00ade\u00admo\u00adny in Sep\u00adtem\u00adber 1713. A new vault was duly sub\u00adsti\u00adtut\u00aded, which is sup\u00adport\u00aded by two Tus\u00adcan columns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Com\u00adpared with the crypt-like low\u00ader church, the upper church, with a nave which curves gen\u00adtly in towards the apse, a flat ceil\u00ading vault, and rich Roco\u00adco dec\u00ado\u00adra\u00adtion dat\u00ading from 1755, is attrac\u00adtive\u00adly light and airy. Spe\u00adcial fea\u00adtures are the stuc\u00adco mar\u00adble pul\u00adpit, the fiery car\u00adtouch\u00ades with bust images of the \u201cSal\u00adva\u00adtor Mun\u00addi\u201d and \u201cMater Sal\u00adva\u00adtoris\u201d (1580) to each side of the sanc\u00adtu\u00adary arch, the dec\u00ado\u00adrat\u00aded gallery front, and an altar made by F. A. Neu. On this altar, which is framed by columns draped in folds of stuc\u00adco cloth, stands a Late Goth\u00adic stat\u00adue of the Vir\u00adgin (1520, lat\u00ader retouched). It replaced the stat\u00adue which was alleged\u00adly donat\u00aded to the Frauen\u00adberg church by St. Rupert, whose fig\u00adure (iden\u00adti\u00adfied by the salt pot), along with that of St. Wolf\u00adgang (with a church and an axe), flank the Mar\u00adi\u00adan image like two watch\u00admen at a shrine. Above the high altar the ceil\u00ading vault fres\u00adcoes, com\u00adplet\u00aded by C. D. Asam in 1714, com\u00adpare Mary with the dawn (a motif tak\u00aden from the Solomon\u00adic Song of Songs) while above the nave St. Rupert \u2013 accom\u00adpa\u00adnied by Duke Tas\u00adsi\u00adlo III and his wife \u2013 place Bavaria and the abbey under her pro\u00adtec\u00adtion. The four cor\u00adner images depict scenes of the suc\u00adcess\u00adful work of the \u201cApos\u00adtle of the Bavar\u00adi\u00adans\u201d: Rupert bap\u00adtiz\u00ading the first con\u00adverts, destroy\u00ading the pagan tem\u00adple on the Arzberg and con\u00adse\u00adcrat\u00ading the new chapel, and final\u00adly, the Chris\u00adt\u00adian neo\u00adphytes pray\u00ading to Our Lady.
