The monastery, in which sev\u00aden Bene\u00addictines live today, is locat\u00aded in the \u201cWel\u00adtenburg\u00ader Enge\u201d nature reserve, the last wild riv\u00ader sec\u00adtion of the Danube in Bavaria. Here the riv\u00ader has worked its way through the Jura lime\u00adstone for thou\u00adsands of years. Rocky steep slopes rise up on both sides with a com\u00adbi\u00adna\u00adtion of dif\u00adfer\u00adent ani\u00admal and plant com\u00admu\u00adni\u00adties that is unique in Europe. The set\u00adtle\u00adment of the area dates back to the Bronze and Iron Ages. The begin\u00adnings of the monastery in the 7th cen\u00adtu\u00adry are shroud\u00aded in leg\u00adend. How\u00adev\u00ader, the Bene\u00addic\u00adtine abbey has gained par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar impor\u00adtance as a com\u00adplex from the 18th cen\u00adtu\u00adry with the monastery church, planned and designed by the Asam broth\u00aders as a major work of baroque art in Germany.<\/p>\n
n the his\u00adtor\u00adi\u00adcal cel\u00adlar of the monastery brew\u00adery, which was carved out of the nat\u00adur\u00adal rock and can be seen on an engrav\u00ading from 1726, an exhi\u00adbi\u00adtion designed by Dr. Maria Bau\u00admann, to immerse your\u00adself in the past and present. The arc stretch\u00ades from the flint pick to the first ear\u00adly Chris\u00adt\u00adian traces and the event\u00adful cen\u00adturies of the monastery from the Mid\u00addle Ages to mod\u00adern times to the cur\u00adrent life and work of the Bene\u00addictines in Wel\u00adtenburg. It com\u00admem\u00ado\u00adrates the builder, Abbot Mau\u00adrus B\u00e4chel, who began build\u00ading the church in 1716 with a great deal of dar\u00ading and lit\u00adtle mon\u00adey, and the out\u00adstand\u00ading work of the Asams. But there is also a focus on the great crafts\u00adman\u00adship that masons, car\u00adpen\u00adters, stone\u00adma\u00adsons and many oth\u00aders have achieved in build\u00ading the church.
